3 Cloud Consumption Trends Rendering BMC and ServiceNow Useless

BMC And ServiceNow are established CMDB and ITSM vendors owning at least 70% of the market space. As the enterprises began to shift their workloads to AWS, Azure and GCE, these vendors failed to make successful adjustments in their product strategy.

As cloud adoption grew, these vendors missed the opportunity to streamline their products. For example, BMC customers are still required to load their AWS inventory through a maze of adapters instead of just discovering assets automatically via AWS, Azure and Google API.

BMC’s own offering is actually still available in on-premises mode and interface looks like something built in PowerBuilder 5 back in ’96. What does that tell you about a company who wants you to buy their cloud management solution?

Serverless Computing

BMC and ServiceNow are desperately trying to retrofit their products based datacenter model where you pretty much had 5 CIs: server, switch, router, etc. This model cannot accommodate AWS S3 Bucket, Azure App Insights and GCE BigQuery Tables. Cloudaware for comparison has over 900 different CIs to accommodate every type of computing and storage resource in AWS, GCE and Azure. So go ahead and try to create a CR for AWS Lambda in BMC.

Cloud Cost Management

Enterprises spend millions per month on cloud computing infrastructure. Their application portfolios and mappings to specific infrastructure are maintained in the CMDB and yet if the application is in the cloud neither BMC or ServiceNow can tell how much that application costs to operate in the cloud.

Self-Service

The traditional ITSM models with their request forms make a lot less sense in the age of cloud management consoles, cloud formation terraform templates. Provisioning infrastructure is no longer a multi-day, manual process. Show me a DevOps developer who is willing to wait for an approval make a specific API call to AWS. Traditional ITSM as-is, from the datacenter days, is incongruent with speed and automation in the cloud.
