What is SPOT CMDB?

SPOT is an acronym for Single Point of Truth. Older implementations for CMDB from ServiceNow and BMC Atrium rely largely on manual or one time data imports and as a result are not reliable source of current truth.

At Cloudaware we see customers who cycling through up to 4,000 instances per day via auto-scaling, spot instances and AWS EMR workloads. If we relied on relatively static CMDBs, the data about our inventory in AWS or Azure would be hopelessly out of sync within hours.

Cloudaware CMDB, on the other hand, has been designed by cloud based environments and containers first. We added support for bare metal, VMWare cloud offerings much later when our customer base requested it.

Cloudaware CMDB relies on real-time discovery adapters not just for AWS, Azure and Google Cloud Platform but also 50 or so other popular enterprise monitoring, security and DevOps tools such as NewRelic, DataDog, TrendMicro, Puppet and Chef.

By adding real time discovery into tools like NewRelic or Puppet, Cloudaware CMDB becomes single point of truth that can truly answer questions such as:

  • What instances are not being monitored?
  • What instances are not getting scanned?
  • What instances do not have IDS agents?

The reason Cloudaware CMDB can answer those questions is because it cross references multiple sources of data in to a single record or configuration item (CI in ITIL speak).

Let’s take a a look at a simple NewRelic Example.

Above we can see Cloudaware CMDB retrieving list of instances from AWS and then also retrieving list of monitored instances from NewRelic. Now that Cloudaware is cross referencing two separate data sources it can actually tell us which instances are and are not monitored.

Same capability is available for over 50 other plugins including Nessus, Qualys, Nagios, Ansible, Chef and many others.
